The Basics of Data Communication
Data communication is the key component that connects us to the devices and services we rely on in our interconnected digital world. It is comprised of a variety of methods and media that dictate how information is transferred from one end to the next. Understanding how this works helps us design efficient and reliable networks that deliver the benefits of increased connectivity, like better business efficiency, higher productivity, and technological advancements in automation.
Data communication is the transfer of data between computers using the medium or channel. This can be done via a wire cable or radio frequency, satellite signal or wirelessly. The sender is the person or device transmitting data and the receiver is the computer receiving the data. In a data communication network, more than two computers could be involved in the process of communication.
Multiplexing and Demultiplexing are communication techniques that optimize bandwidth use and reduce costs. Both processes require special hardware able to combine and then separate these signals. This task is typically carried out by custom integrated circuits, that are found in a wide range of communication devices including cellphones, computers, and printers.
Full-duplex communications is the type of data communication that allows simultaneous two-way communication within two devices. This is a more complex mode than simplex transmission since it requires the ability of sending and receiving data at the same time.
